Phone Harassment Scam

A member of the community has unfortunately been subject to some harassing phone calls recently.

If you're receiving harassing phone calls, document the incidents, block the numbers, and consider reporting them to the authorities or your phone service provider. It is not advised to give away personal information or follow instructions that are out of the normal.

Steps to Take When Receiving Harassing Phone Calls

Document the Calls: Keep a detailed record of each harassing call. Note the date, time, caller ID (if available), and a summary of what was said. This information can be crucial if you decide to report the harassment.

Block the Number: Most smartphones have built-in features that allow you to block specific numbers. This can help prevent further calls from the same source.

Contact Your Phone Service Provider: Reach out to your phone company to report the harassment. They may have additional tools or services to help you block unwanted calls or trace the source of the harassment.

Report to Authorities: If the calls are threatening or you feel unsafe, contact your local law enforcement. Provide them with the documentation you've collected. They can investigate the matter further and may take action against the harasser.

Consider Legal Action: If the harassment continues, you may want to send a cease-and-desist letter to the caller, formally requesting that they stop contacting you. If necessary, consult with a legal professional about obtaining a restraining order.

Use Call-Blocking Apps: There are various apps available that can help filter and block unwanted calls. These can be particularly useful for dealing with robocalls and spam.
